Buddha Nature
The more we trust in our innate goodness the more our choices are guided by goodness. Our goodness is our Godliness––our Buddha Nature. Or as A Course in Miracles says, “There is only one Son of God and we are all him.”
Ego
Ego arises out of the mistrust in our true nature and is an attempt to be, or at least appear to be, who we think we are supposed to be. However you can’t not really be what you what you are. You can’t manufacture qualities you don’t already have. The control freak nature of the ego likes to take credit for what goes right, although at the same time attacks itself for being a phony. And then tries even hard to get it’s act together.
Ego arises out of the need to fit into world of other egos. A world that people have forgotten who and what they really are. Of course this is inherently uncomfortable, confusing, anxiety producing and depressing, but to minimise the discomfort we cause others and to fit in we learn to keep up appearances and play the role we seem to be expected to play. Ego is basically a process of living the lie that there is something inherently bad about our nature.
Myth of Original Sin
On top of that, if we see how people are caught in this lie and taking the pain of living with this lie out on the people they are closest to. And then say something about it, we are then often shamed for being cruel or disloyal, even though we are just telling the truth––like the boy who speaks the truth about the Emperor’s lack of new clothes. So rather than being a innocent child of God that is learning how to be human, we are cursed with the assumption of original sin––that we are inherently bad and need to be pressured and pressured into being good rather that taught how to trust our common sense and good hearts. We live in a time where whistleblowers are more likely to be punished than rewarded. To fit into a an ego driven world upholding the image that denies the suffering of living lies, is more important than telling the truth in the spirit of unconditional love and acceptance. Once accepted, then we can address the problems and insanity of the world with open minds and open hearts.
Meditation and Awakening fro Illusion
The ego structure is an illusionary house of cards always on the verge of collapsing. It needs constant reenforcement. To awaken to out Buddha Nature, like Buddha under the Bodhi tree or Christ in the desert for forty days and forty nights, we must let our house of cards crumble and find out what is left that needs no believing or effort to be. You might say this is the essence of a good meditation practice. In meditation we practice resting in the still, silent spaciousness of being and let all the effort to be someone or belieive in something to fall away and find out what is left.
